A young mother in Indiana was killed earlier this month following a confrontation with supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement.
According to a Fox News report, 24-year-old Jessica Doty Whitaker was mortally wounded by gunfire in Indianapolis, allegedly for simply having uttered the phrase “all lives matter.”
According to Fox News, Whitaker was strolling with friends along the Indianapolis Canal Walk during the early morning hours of July 5.
Local Fox affiliate WXIN reported that someone in Whitaker’s party was accused of using a racial slur, which was heard by another group of people.
A confrontation ensued, with a member of the other group yelling, “Black lives matter,” to which Whitaker or someone with her responded, “All lives matter.”
Eventually, the scuffle died down as cooler heads prevailed, and while everyone in Whitaker’s group was under the impression the squabble was finished, the ensuing calm did not last for long.
As they made their way along the Canal Walk, members of the other group reportedly laid in wait for Whitaker’s group at a nearby bridge, as WXIN reported.
According to WXIN, Whitaker’s fiancé, Jose Ramirez, who was present during the incident, stated, “It was squashed, and they went up the hill and left we thought, but they were sitting on St. Clair waiting for us to come under the bridge and that’s when she got shot.”
Ramirez said that he did return fire on the assailants, but did not strike anyone from the other group.
Once the dust settled, Whitaker had been fatally wounded, leaving behind a 3-year-old son.
“It’s hard to tell him his mom is in heaven and if you want to talk to her you have to look up and say, ‘I love you, mom,’” Ramirez said in the aftermath of the tragedy, according to WXIN. He went on:
We’re going through a lot. The 3-year-old boy doesn’t even understand really. I just want justice for Jessica and her son and her family.
Police have yet to officially confirm Ramirez’s account of the fateful events, and while the shooting is still under investigation by local Indianapolis authorities, no suspects in Whitaker’s killing are reported to be in custody, according to reports.
