‘Extremely violent’: Witness catches cellphone footage of brutal assault by Portland rioters

A series of destructive and sometimes violent protests have plagued the streets of Portland, Oregon, for weeks following the death of George Floyd in Minnesota earlier this year.

As reported by the New York Post, one of the most recent violent assaults was caught on cellphone cameras on Sunday night. Black Lives Matter protesters mobbed a white driver who tried to flee but eventually crashed his vehicle. He was then dragged from the vehicle and beaten until he was unconscious and bloody.

“He finally crashed”

Video clips of the incident soon went viral on social media, apparently showing the victim being punched and kicked each time he attempted to stand up during the attack.

Already showing signs of injury, the man can be seen sitting on the pavement when one of his assailants runs up behind him and kicks him in the face, sending him to the ground with a sickening thud.

As he lay apparently unconscious and bleeding from a head wound, he was robbed and his truck looted over the course of several minutes.

The video was recorded by a man identified as Drew Hernandez, who uploaded it to his Twitter account and spoke to Fox News on Monday about the assault he witnessed.

“They chased him … until he finally crashed,” Hernandez recalled. “When they finally caught up to him, they went nuts.”

“Like you’re walking in a third-world country”

He went on to tell reporter Dan Springer that the “extremely violent” incident should not be the norm in the United States.

“Sometimes I forget I’m walking the streets of an American city in the Northwest,” he said. “Sometimes it feels like you’re walking in a third-world country.”

Based on his experience as a witness and accounts he heard from others on the scene, Hernandez described how the victim initially attempted to render aid to another individual apparently being harassed by the protesters. After attempting to flee in his truck, the mob reportedly caught up to him and prompted a crash.

The prime suspect in the assault was identified, according to The Oregonian. The Portland Police Bureau believes 25-year-old Marquise Love is responsible for kicking the victim in the head, though he had not yet been located or arrested as of the latest updates available.

While this case has prompted a widespread outpouring of support for the victim, including an online fundraiser to help cover hospital costs, it is a shocking reminder of the lawlessness that is being tolerated by officials in Portland and beyond.
