Will Smith formally resigns from the Academy as country awaits disciplinary action

After he assaulted Oscars host Chris Rock on stage during the annual awards show on live television for the world to see, actor Will Smith still hasn’t suffered any consequences for his illegal and dangerous actions.

According to Fox News, Smith, who appeared unhinged during and after the attack, has formally resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, though such an action is merely symbolic and will not have a meaningful effect on his daily lifestyle or career.

Smith’s resignation from the organization came in the wake of an official statement released by the Academy in which it vowed to investigate the incident and take appropriate punitive action.

The Academy swiftly accepted Smith’s resignation.

The apologies

While virtually anyone else would likely still be in jail after assaulting a comedian on stage, Smith, so far, has gotten away with only publishing a few apologetic statements. His latest apology came in his official resignation announcement.

“I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable,” Smith wrote.

He added: “The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy.”

The actor went on to add that “change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason”.

Academy accepts

It didn’t take long for the Academy to accept Smith’s resignation.

“We have received and accepted Mr. Will Smith’s immediate resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18,” the organization wrote.

According to BBC, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is made up of roughly 10,000 members. To join, one must be nominated by two members, or one can forgo the nomination process if they’re nominated for an Oscar, which triggers automatic consideration for membership.

Only time will tell if the Academy decides to let Smith use his celebrity privilege to skate on this situation, or if it decides to use the shocking moment as an example.
