Wife of local GOP activist in New Jersey charged with Christmas murder of husband

A prominent local Republican activist was found dead of a gunshot wound in his New Jersey home on Christmas night, and his wife has been arrested for the alleged murder, the Conservative Brief reported.

Police reportedly responded to a 911 call from the home of 57-year-old David Wigglesworth and, after finding him dead, took into custody his wife, 51-year-old Marylue Wigglesworth, for having allegedly fired the fatal shot at her husband.

Christmas night murder

New Jersey’s 101.5 FM reported that police responded to a call at 10:19 pm on Christmas of an “injured man” at the Mays Landing residence of David Wigglesworth in the Hamilton Township area.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and, shortly thereafter, his wife was arrested and charged with the alleged murder of her husband.

Marylue Wigglesworth is now reportedly being held in the Atlantic County jail as she awaits a court hearing.

Active in local politics

According to local WPG Talk Radio, Wigglesworth was a prominent Republican activist in the area who had previously run unsuccessfully to be elected to the Hamilton Township Committee.

Following a failed run for the committee in 2012, Wigglesworth ran again in 2019, per 101.5 FM, but again fell short of obtaining a committee seat.

Nonetheless, he served on the township’s Planning Board and was an active volunteer at the Atlantic City Boys and Girls Club.

Seemingly happy marriage on social media

The New York Post reported that the Wigglesworth couple shared an adult son and, by all appearances on social media, appeared to be living a happy and idyllic life with one another.

That included numerous vacations and many pictures together in which they were smiling and pleasant.

It was unknown at the time of the Post’s report what may have led to the shooting, and the outlet noted that neither the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office nor the Hamilton Township Police Department were forthcoming with answers in that regard.

Wife admitted to shooting husband following argument

However, a Fox News report on Wednesday indicated that, according to court filings, Marylue Wigglesworth had admitted to the police that she and her husband had been engaged in an altercation at the time that she had called 911 and that she had shot him.

The husband had been found deceased in the couple’s bedroom from a gunshot wound with the presumed murder weapon, a handgun, located close nearby the body.

“Our hearts are heavy with the loss of David Wigglesworth,” the Township of Hamilton Republicans said in a statement Tuesday. “He was a dedicated member of the party and worked tirelessly to support many Republican campaigns over the years, including his own.”
