Amid all of the current discussion and debate surrounding the issue of gun control, Democrats and the national media have chosen to focus intently upon the tragic, but relatively rare mass shootings involving semi-automatic rifles, even as similar tolls of dead and injured are accumulated virtually every single weekend in the Democrat-controlled city of Chicago, where guns are already strictly regulated.
But while the national press ignores the relentless gun violence in Chicago, local media continues to keep close tabs on it and has now revealed that this most recent weekend’s hail of gunfire resulted in 34 people being shot, with six of those victims dying from their wounds.
Six fatalities this weekend
The Chicago Sun-Times reported on Monday that between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday a total of 34 individuals were shot in a spate of separate incidents around the city, six of them fatally.
The youngest victim to die from the gunfire was a 17-year-old woman who was approached by a man in a dark alley, engaged in a verbal altercation and then was shot three times in the head and multiple times in the upper body with a handgun. She was later pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
The oldest of those killed appeared to be a 49-year-old man who was found unresponsive after being shot multiple times in the head and once in the back.
In addition to that victim, another man estimated to be in his 40s was found dead in an alley with one gunshot wound to the neck, and a 48-year-old man was also killed separately in a triple-shooting on Saturday morning.
At least 24 other non-fatal weekend shootings
WMAQ also released its near-weekly rundown of the prior weekend’s violence with an article published Sunday evening that had to be updated later on Monday to include additional shootings that came to light after the initial publication.
Of the 24 other non-fatal shootings over the weekend detailed in the report, the youngest victims were a pair of 15-year-old boys who were shot in separate incidents on Saturday, one in the abdomen during the afternoon and the other in leg later on in the evening.
The oldest victim of the non-fatal shootings appears to have been a 49-year-old man who was shot in an undisclosed location by an unknown person as he attempted to break up a fight among family members in the early hours of Sunday morning.
One other particularly concerning incident happened around the same time and involved a security guard at an unnamed venue who retrieved a handgun that he had seen drop to the floor. He picked it up and escorted two men out of the establishment, but they summoned friends who held the security guard at gunpoint while one of the men who was previously ejected reclaimed his firearm from the guard and shot him twice.
Deafening media silence
Democrats and the media are wholly obsessed with random mass shootings by typically insane individuals armed with semi-automatic rifles, but they all but refuse to even acknowledge that similar tallies of dead and injured are registered every weekend by known criminals armed with banned and likely stolen weapons in the gun control capital of Chicago.
The disgusting disparity in media coverage over these kinds of incidents is truly shameful, and if Democrats and the national press hope to have any sort of credibility with the general public when it comes to their demands for stricter gun control, they would be wise to give equal consideration to the epidemic of gang-related shootings in major urban centers instead of narrowly focusing on relatively isolated events.
