Is Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) finally quitting her impeachment crusade? After months of clamoring about impeaching President Donald Trump, Waters admitted this week that the Democrats never really considered impeachment “as a strategy.”
“I think we do nothing now but concentrate on getting the information, getting that report,” Waters told reporters, referring to the special counsel report which was turned over to Attorney General Bill Barr on Friday.
“[Impeachment has] never been discussed as a strategy for this caucus. It’s only a few of us,” she said.
The Mueller report has really hijacked everything the Democrats wanted to do heading into the 2020 election.
The probe was their best hope for finding evidence to support impeachment — and it failed to deliver, disappointing many Democrats.
“Whatever the bet was last week that the president wouldn’t finish out his term, that bet is not as good this week,” Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA), who has twice filed impeachment articles, told Politico. “Our best single source of game-changing revelations was the Mueller report, and according to Barr, there aren’t any game-changing revelations in it.”
Now that Trump has been essentially exonerated on collusion by special counsel Robert Mueller, Democrats have to find some way to knock the Trump Train off its tracks.
Democrats are now asking Barr to release all the supporting documentation from Mueller’s investigation so they can try to find at least one thing that will allow them to continue to pursue their own investigations.
Impeachment Still Being Pursued
It’s a surprising change of tone for Waters, who said just days earlier that she did not consider Mueller’s findings conclusive. “This is not the end of anything. Well, it is the end of the report and the investigation by Mueller, but those of us who share these committees with our oversight because there is so much that needs to be taken a look at this point. It is not the end of everything,” she said.
While Waters may be backing away, a few Dems are still clinging to impeachment, including freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who has also made a name for herself by calling for impeachment.
On Wednesday, Tlaib introduced a resolution asking the House Judiciary Committee to investigate possible reasons for impeachment against Trump. The resolution was co-sponsored by only one other Democrat — vocal impeachment supporter Rep. Al Green (D-TX).
This is all starting to work against the party, though, which is probably why Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to quash these little movements within her party. The American people are fed up with bogus investigations that result in millions of dollars of their taxpayer money being wasted.
