Voter support for impeachment drops after public hearings

For many Americans, it has become obvious that the Democrats are losing big time on impeachment. But, here is something for those who still have some doubts.

A bombshell new poll has found that the percentage of Americans that support the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump dropped after the Democrats’ first week of public impeachment hearings.

The numbers

The Politico-Morning Consult poll was conducted between November 15 and 17, and found that 48 percent of respondents now support the impeachment inquiry while 45 percent oppose it.

We can put this into perspective by comparing it to the poll that was taken just before public impeachment hearings. Then, 50 percent supported the impeachment inquiry, while 42 percent opposed.

Accordingly, support has dropped two percentage points while opposition has risen by three percentage points. The result is an overall drop in support of five percentage points.

This finding of 45 percent in opposition to the impeachment inquiry is the high percentage of opposition since the Morning Consult began taking this poll in early October.

The cause

When one takes a step back and looks at what has happened since the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry went public, the poll’s findings are not at all surprising.

Thus far, we have heard the testimony of acting U.S. Ambassador to the Ukraine William Taylor, State Department official George Kent, and former U.S. Ambassador to the Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch. And, what have they had to offer?

None of these individuals claimed to have any firsthand knowledge of President Trump’s reason for delaying the release of military aid to Ukraine. None of them have been able to show that the president did anything wrong in his July 25th phone call with Ukranian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

In short, the Democrats’ impeachment inquiry has been a flop.

Unintended consequences

While we’re on the topic of polls, there is something else that should be considered, which is that, since the Ukraine “whistleblower” situation became the Democrats’ focus in October, Trump’s approval rating has actually gone up. The latest Gallup poll has him at 43 percent, which is exactly where he was prior to the impeachment proceedings.

All signs seem to point to the obvious which is that the Democrats have once again embarrassed themselves. Now it appears likely that they will reap what they sow in 2020.
