A top Democrat from Virginia has been charged with a pair of felonies for her alleged role in the destruction of a Confederate monument.
According to The Washington Times, Virginia state Sen. Louise Lucas is facing charges “of conspiracy to commit a felony and injury to a monument in excess of $1,000” after a collection of Confederate statues in Portsmouth, Virginia were destroyed.
Lock her up!
According to the Washington Times‘ report, Lucas is alleged to have been one of several local officials who were present at a protest where a Confederate monument was damaged.
The Washington Times reports that “[t]he monument stands on a site where slaves were once punished. It consists of a large obelisk and statues of four Confederate military personnel,” the report adds.
Calls have increased in recent months for memorials like these to be taken down. Similar displays have already been removed elsewhere in Virginia, including in Richmond, where a statue of J.E.B. Stuart was taken down at the behest of the mayor in July, according to The New York Times.
But there’s a right way and a wrong way to do these things — and Lucas and company went about it the wrong way.
According to The Washington Times, she is believed to have been part of a group that decapitated some of the statues and tore another completely down.
In addition to Lucas, a representative on the local school board, members of the local NAACP, and individuals from the public defender’s office have also been charged in connection to the incident, according to The Washington Times.
Leading by example?
Of course, Lucas claims she is innocent, but it is unlikely that charges would have been filed against someone with such a high profile unless there was solid evidence to prove her guilt. And if she is found guilty, the lawmaker must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Indeed, elected officials are supposed to lead by example — or at least, that what’s the Democrats often say — and Lucas is no exception. We can’t bow to the every whim of the “woke” mob without at least giving the other side a chance to speak.
If Lucas wanted to make change, she should have been out there encouraging Virginians to petition or otherwise go about it through the proper channels — not helping rowdy protesters topple federal property to the ground.
Only time will tell if Lucas will face justice for her role in this crime or if the Democrat lawmaker, like so many before her, will skirt accountability. But as things stand, it’s not looking good for her.
