Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson announced he would be going on vacation this week, days after a top writer resigned following the revelation that he had posted controversial comments online.
Now, Variety has reported that the cable news personality has sold his home in Washington, D.C., for nearly $4 million while purchasing a $3 million residence on a barrier island off the Gulf Coast of Florida.
“They were threatening my family”
Carlson had already faced mounting calls for boycotts of his sponsors based on the frequently hardline conservative commentary he shares on his top-rated weeknight program. That effort resulted in a number of advertisers pulling out of the show.
When lead writer Blake Neff’s anonymous online posts came to light, he soon resigned and Carlson faced new scrutiny.
The fact that the host abruptly took time off of his show and sold his D.C. home has led to speculation about his possible future as a broadcaster.
In 2018, protesters showed up outside of Carlson’s home in a demonstration he later said was designed to silence him.
“They weren’t protesting anything,” he said. “They weren’t trying to change my mind or advocate for a position. They were threatening my family to get me to stop talking.”
As for Neff’s comments, Fox News Channel CEO Suzanne Scott and President and Executive Editor Jay Wallace issued a sharply critical joint statement.
The network executives described Neff’s posts as “horrendous and deeply offensive racist, sexist and homophobic comments,” asserting that the media company “strongly condemns this horrific racist, misogynistic and homophobic behavior.”
Such actions, they concluded “cannot and will not be tolerated at any time in any part of our workforce.”
Carlson also denounced the statements, but also suggested that Neff “paid a very heavy price” and criticized the “ghouls now beating their chests in triumph at the destruction of a young man.”
He is not the first cable news host to head out on vacation when a controversy begins to brew. Many of his fans and critics alike, however, will be watching closely to see if the latest dustup has any noticeable impact on his career.
