Musk and journalist Taibbi expose damning ‘Twitter Files’ of internal communications about censoring Hunter Biden laptop story

Tech billionaire and new Twitter CEO Elon Musk teased last week that he would release the internal communications of the platform’s staff to reveal what actually happened behind the scenes with regard to Twitter’s active censorship and suppression of the New York Post’s bombshell — and since proven accurate — initial reporting in October 2020 about Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop.

Musk followed through on Friday by way of a revelatory thread of tweets about the so-called “Twitter Files” shared by liberal-leaning independent journalist Matt Taibbi, the Western Journal reported.

What was revealed in that thread was shocking, to an extent, insofar as it provided documentary evidence that confirmed the prior suspicions of many that left-leaning Twitter executives and staffers acted deliberately to censor and suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story for apparently partisan purposes and without any legitimate justification.

Partisan political interference

“What really happened with the Hunter Biden story suppression by Twitter will be published on Twitter at 5pm ET!” Musk tweeted Friday afternoon, with a follow-up tweet that declared “This will be awesome” and featured an emoji of popcorn followed by another tweet that hinted of possible delays due to last-minute “double-checking” of certain facts.

The “show” eventually began following a brief delay Friday evening as Taibbi launched into his mega-thread of dozens of tweets that exposed the partisan inner workings of Twitter’s top staffers.

The main takeaways from Taibbi’s postings were that Twitter executives and staffers acted with impunity without the knowledge or approval of former CEO Jack Dorsey and that staffers would censor specific tweets and even high-profile accounts upon request from politicians and political organizations, including then-candidate Joe Biden’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Twitter execs knew the “hacked materials” excuse was bogus

Taibbi’s thread also revealed that top Twitter executives, facing a modicum of internal pushback, knew almost immediately that the “hacked materials” policy they had initially cited as justification to lock the accounts of the New York Post and others, as well as to censor and prevent the spread of the Hunter Biden laptop story, was not supported by the facts or applicable in this instance, but carried on with that excuse regardless.

The internal communications further showed that top executives were quickly informed of the growing “backlash” to their actions on Capitol Hill from both Republicans and Democrats, albeit for different reasons, as the former threatened investigations into the overtly partisan censorship while the latter insistently demanded even more censorship and content “moderation” without a care for how that might impact free speech and the First Amendment.

In the end, while several different executives and staffers played a role in the blatant and unjustifiable censorship and suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story, it appears that two once-prominent now-former top figures at the platform should bear the brunt of the blame — Vijaya Gadde, the former head of Twitter’s legal, policy, and trust division, and Yoel Roth, the former head of the Orwellian-named Trust and Safety division.

More to come on other issues

Interestingly enough, Taibbi noted in one of the final tweets of the thread that there was much more to be exposed from the internal communications dubbed the “Twitter Files” on a range of other topics, including “shadow-banning, boosting, follower counts, the fate of various individual accounts, and more,” that will be shared publicly at an unspecified later date.

If those internal communications are anything like what was revealed with regard to the Hunter Biden laptop story, then people can likely expect to once again have their suspicions confirmed with documented evidence of partisan activity at the behest of political actors that, while perhaps not exclusively one-sided, indisputably favored one ideological side of the spectrum over the other.
