‘Ripe for fraud’: Democrat Rep. Tulsi Gabbard comes out against ballot harvesting

Ask 100 Democrats about voter fraud, and 99 of them will likely tell you it is nothing to worry about. Former presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) is that one, however.

Gabbard just came out in favor of banning ballot harvesting, warning that the practice can easily be abused and contribute to voter fraud in the 2020 election.

In a press release Thursday, Gabbard announced that she has co-authored HR8285, the Election Fraud Prevention Act — “a bipartisan bill that aims to improve the security of the mail-in ballot process.” Also authoring the bill is Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL).

Potential for abuse

“Unfortunately, ballot harvesting has allowed for fraud and abuse to occur by those who could tamper with or discard ballots for or against a certain candidate or party,” Gabbard explained in a video posted to social media.

“This is something that we’ve actually seen happen in recent elections,” she added. Watch below:

A bipartisan problem

“Banning ballot harvesting shouldn’t be a partisan issue,” Davis said, according to the press release. “Allowing any individual, including political operatives, to pick up multiple voters’ ballots and deliver them to a polling location undermines the integrity of our elections. We’ve seen ballot harvesting widely used in states like California and a recent court case in North Carolina outlined the clear opportunities for fraud and coercion with the ballot harvesting process.”

Ballot harvesting is the process where ballots are dropped off in collection boxes or picked up by third parties, then turned in on behalf of the voters. Various forms of ballot harvesting are currently legal in 26 U.S. states, according to CBS News. California, in particular, stands out because the state has allowed any person, not just a family member, to collect and return ballots since 2016. And if only one party is actively harvesting its voters’ ballots, it can have a major impact on an election, as California Republicans discovered to their chagrin in 2018.

The bill put forward by Gabbard and Davis seeks to eliminate large-scale ballot harvesting by third parties, ensuring that “voters seeking to turn in their mail-in ballots may only be assisted by an election official or mail carrier acting in their official capacities as well as family members, household members, or caregivers.”

You have to wonder…

As America reopens and figures out how to resume most activities safely even amid a pandemic, the fact that most Democrats are continuing to push for automatic mail-in voting “due to the coronavirus” should be very alarming to Americans.

At this point, we all know what is and what is not working. With proper precautions, there simply is no reason why voters cannot make it to the polls on election day.

During many of the primary elections that used mail-in voting on a large scale this year, there were serious problems. Now, imagine turnout that is about double that of the primaries …

The last thing anyone in this country wants to see is a contested election, but that is exactly where we are headed.
