President Donald Trump just won a huge endorsement.
The National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the largest police union in the United States, announced its endorsement of the Trump-Pence 2020 ticket on Friday.
“On behalf of the 355,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, we are proud to unanimously endorse @realDonaldTrump for President of the United States,” the group tweeted.
An easy decision
FOP president Patrick Yoes issued a statement explaining the organization’s endorsement.
“During his first four years, President Trump has made it crystal clear that he has our backs,” he wrote. “Our members know that he listens to the concerns of our brothers and sisters in uniform and is able to make tough decisions on the issues most important to law enforcement. President Trump is committed to keeping our communities and families safe.”
The extent to which the two candidates running for president have the backs of law enforcement is a key issue this election given what has followed from the death of George Floyd. Amid calls to defund the police from the left, President Trump has stood firm, insisting on the necessity of a strong police force for the maintenance of law and order.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, on the other hand, has jumped on the police reform bandwagon. Although Biden claims to oppose “defunding the police,” he has chosen a running mate, in Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), who has praised it in action.
A “proud” endorsement
Given this difference, it is no surprise that the FOP has chosen to endorse Trump-Pence.
“Public safety will undoubtedly be a main focus for voters in this year’s election,” Yoes said. “Look at what the national discourse has focused on for the last six months. President Trump has shown time after time that he supports our law enforcement officers and understands the issues our members face every day.”
The FOP apparently had sent questionnaires to both the Trump and Biden campaigns. After these questionnaires were returned to the FOP, it sent the responses of the candidates to union members, who then voted in favor of supporting Trump.
“The FOP is proud to endorse a candidate who calls for law and order across our nation,” Yoes said. “He has the full and enthusiastic support of the FOP.”
This police union endorsement can now be added to the many others the Trump-Pence has received in the past few months. It looks like the thin-blue line is going to be a thick-red vote this November.
