Former President Donald Trump held nothing back at his highly-anticipated Ohio rally over the weekend as he ripped Rep. Anthony Gonzales (R-OH), who will be fighting to hold his seat against his challenger, former Trump aide Max Miller.
According to Breitbart, the former president made clear to the rally attendees that he is certainly not a fan of the incumbent Ohio Republican, calling him a “grandstanding RINO” and reminding the audience of a time when he essentially begged for a ride home on Air Force One.
“It’s a character trait that is not too good,” Trump said of Gonzalez. “He’s a sellout, he’s a fake Republican and a disgrace to your state. I will tell you that.”
“He’s a grandstanding RINO”
Gonzalez was one of a small handful of Republican members of Congress who voted in favor of impeaching the former president for a second time, on the heels of the deadly events that transpired during the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Trump vowed on several occasions that he would use his vast resources and political influence to make sure that the Republicans who turned against him suffer in their upcoming reelection bids, and the 45th president made clear on Saturday night in Ohio that he’s following through on that promise.
“He’s a grandstanding RINO [Republican in name only] who is not respected in D.C. who voted for the unhinged unconstitutional impeachment witch hunt,” Trump told the crowd as they fiercely booed the sitting Republican House member.
The former president went on to recall a time when Gonzalez repeatedly asked if he could ride on Air Force One on a trip back to his home state. “I said, ‘What the hell, he’s asking, so let him ride,'” Trump said, recalling that he wasn’t very familiar with Gonzalez at that time other than the fact that he was an Ohio Republican congressman.
“The next time I heard his name, next time, he was impeaching me!” Trump said, eliciting another round of loud boos from the energized rally audience.
It’s Miller time
Aside from bashing President Joe Biden, Gonzalez and reminding his supporters that the 2020 election was rigged and stolen, Trump used part of his Ohio rally speech to promote Miller, a former top White House aide with his sights set on outsing the incumbent Ohio lawmaker next year.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Miller joined Trump on stage at one point during the rally to tag team Gonzalez, calling the GOP lawmaker “a sold-out, RINO foot soldier,” adding that his vote to impeach Trump for a second time is “a betrayal he can never turn back from and that he should have to answer to, day after day after day.”
Trump heaped praise on Miller, calling him “a trusted aide of mine” and boasted about the former aide’s involvement in successful negotiations with North Korea during Trump’s presidency.
The former president will hold a similar rally on July 3 in Sarasota, Florida.
