In a surprising turn of events, the legal team of President Donald Trump distanced itself from attorney Sidney Powell on Sunday, Politico reported.
Powell first began making news headlines as the lawyer representing Trump’s former National Security adviser, Michael Flynn.
She continues to represent Flynn in his attempt to get his guilty plea from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation thrown out.
More recently, Powell has appeared alongside the president’s legal team, which has been conducting investigations in preparation for legal challenges to the results of the 2020 election.
“Not a member”
By appearances alone, it certainly looked as though Powell was part of Trump’s legal team. On Nov. 14, the president tweeted, “Rudy Giuliani, Joseph diGenova, Victoria Toensing, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis, a truly great team, added to our other wonderful lawyers and representatives.”
But on Sunday, the team released a statement signed by Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, both personal lawyers of the president, which distanced Powell from the team.
“Sidney Powell is practicing law on her own,” the statement read, as Politico reported. “She is not a member of the Trump Legal Team. She is also not a lawyer for the President in his personal capacity.”
The statement comes after Powell made controversial claims about election fraud, including a number of bombshell claims on Saturday during an appearance on Newsmax.
Powell alleged a number of voter fraud activities in the state of Georgia, including Biden votes being weighted more heavily than Trump votes, and Georgia officials, perhaps even Gov. Brian Kemp (R), receiving kickbacks for a late grant to use Dominion Voting Systems. “You name the manner of fraud and it occurred in Georgia,” Powell said.
Powell appears to have taken the Trump team’s statement in stride.
“I agree with the statement today,” she said in a response obtained by The Wall Street Journal. “I will represent #WeThePeople and seek the Truth.”
Powell added: “I intend to expose all the fraud and let the chips fall where they may. We will not allow the foundations of this great Republic to be destroyed by abject fraud or our votes for President Trump and other Republicans to be stolen by foreign interests or anyone else.”
