Trump supporters in Arizona protest FBI, nationwide backlash continues

The backlash continues following the FBI’s recent raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

A local CBS affiliate reports that Trump supporters held a protest outside of the FBI’s Phoenix, Arizona, office on Saturday.

Per the outlet:

Holding various flags and guns, supporters of former President Donald Trump gathered outside the FBI’s Phoenix offices on Saturday to protest what they call an “illegal” raid of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida earlier this week.

The bigger picture

This one protest is part of a much larger backlash against the FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) following the raid on Mar-a-Lago.

It appears that the raid was part of an investigation by the DOJ into whether Trump may have violated the law by taking from the White House confidential documents upon his departure. The property receipt, detailing what the FBI took during the raid, does list documents with such labels as “top secret.”

Trump, however, has been arguing that the raid was political in nature, in line with the countless other attacks that the Democrats have launched on him since before he even became president.

Trump supports this in many ways: by claiming that the documents at Mar-a-Lago were declassified, by claiming that the FBI knew about the documents and had him secure them with a special lock, and by claiming that the FBI could have simply asked for the documents and he would have handed them over.

There are several other details about the situation that don’t sit well with Trump supporters, including the fact that the FBI waited several days to execute the search warrant even though they claim the situation was urgent. Some believe that the FBI wasn’t really after the documents, but had a secret agenda related to the ongoing Jan. 6, 2021, investigations.

FBI sees increased threats

Since the Mar-a-Lago raid, the FBI and DOJ have reported an increase in “violent threats.”

The agencies have noted an increase in “general calls” for “civil war” and “armed rebellion.” But, the agencies have also witnessed “multiple articulated threats and calls for the targeted killing of judicial law enforcement and government officials associated with the Palm Beach search.”

There have also been attacks on regional FBI offices. For example, an armed man attempted to breach the FBI’s Cincinnati office.

This is the sort of thing that happens when parts of the government that are supposed to be impartial are viewed as having become politicized and weaponized against the opposition. And, the simple fact is that neither the FBI nor the DOJ has done anything to assure Americans that their targeting of the former president was not politically motivated.
