Congressional Democrats are fuming over this one.
Reports on Thursday revealed that President Donald Trump’s administration has been able to secure more funding for his United States-Mexico border wall.
The good news
The official announcement came straight from a Defense Department official in the Pentagon yesterday.
“Last month we received a new request from the Department of Homeland Security asking for assistance in blocking drug-smuggling corridors on Federal land along the southern border of the United States,” the statement reads. “In response, the Secretary of Defense authorized support of $3.8 billion to build approximately 177 miles of fencing that will help to protect our borders. We will continue to support DHS and other agencies as needed to keep our homeland is secure.”
The official goes on to explain that this was made possible by the redirection of funds. $2.2 of the $3.8 billion has been reallocated from counter-narcotics efforts, while the remaining $1.6 billion is coming from funds that were originally put aside for National Guard equipment.
All-in-all, President Trump is now up to $14.8 billion in funding for the border wall.
Congressional Democrats, expectedly, exploded over the news.
“The President has stolen from the men and women of our military, their families, and the American taxpayers all to pay for a failed campaign promise and endanger our national security,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the vice-chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Similarly, Reps. Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Pete Visclosky (D-IN), the House Appropriations Committee Chairman and the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman, respective, released a statement saying, “President Trump is once again disrespecting the separation of powers and endangering our security by raiding military resources to pay for his wasteful border wall.”
Some congressional Republicans were also not happy with the move, like Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL). Shelby agreed that America needs a border wall but expressed his wish that the money could have come from a different source.
Nonetheless, this will be seen as a big win for President Trump and his supporters.
With the wall and Trump’s agreements with Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador and his “Remain in Mexico” policy, America is finally starting to get control of its illegal immigration problem.
