Ever since the 2016 election, former President Donald Trump has repeatedly accused his then-political rival, failed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, of leading a conspiracy to falsely accuse him of collusion with the Russian government.
The various accusations that make up the purported conspiracy have now been laid out and pieced together in a sprawling lawsuit filed against Clinton and dozens of her alleged cohorts in the fraudulent effort, the Washington Examiner reported.
The suit seeks at least $24 million in financial damages suffered by Trump as well as unspecified court costs and attorneys fees and also puts forward several alleged criminal violations that should be further investigated and prosecuted.
Making the case for an anti-Trump conspiracy
The Hill reported that, in addition to Hillary Clinton, the lawsuit names at least 28 other specific entities and individuals alleged to have been involved in the broad conspiracy, chief among them members of the Clinton campaign, the Democratic National Committee, the Perkins Coie law firm, the FBI and Justice Department, and many others.
The 108-page suit detailed the “unthinkable plot” spurred on by Clinton and her associates to “maliciously” conspire to concoct a “false narrative” alleging inappropriate connections between the Trump campaign and a “hostile foreign sovereignty,” Russia.
“The actions taken in furtherance of their scheme — falsifying evidence, deceiving law enforcement, and exploiting access to highly-sensitive data sources — are so outrageous, subversive, and incendiary that even the events of Watergate pale in comparison,” the suit asserted.
All the alleged co-conspirators worked toward a “single, self-serving purpose: to vilify Donald J. Trump. Indeed, their far-reaching conspiracy was designed to cripple Trump’s bid for the presidency by fabricating a scandal that would be used to trigger an unfounded federal investigation and ignite a media frenzy.”
The lawsuit then laid out its sprawling narrative that linked numerous different acts and events together into a grand scheme to falsely and fraudulently malign Trump that originated during the campaign and continued through Trump’s presidency even unto the current day.
Alleged federal crimes committed
Following the lengthy narrative of events and acts committed by alleged co-conspirators, Trump’s lawsuit then listed off and explained several criminal statutes that had potentially been violated.
According to the suit, that includes the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO Act, as well as RICO conspiracy, obstruction of justice, theft of trade secrets, injurious falsehood, and related conspiracy, malicious prosecution, and related conspiracy, and computer fraud and abuse.
Politico reported that Trump’s lawsuit against Clinton, et al, was filed in federal court in the southern district of Florida, and has been assigned to U.S. District Court Judge Donald Middlebrooks, who was appointed by former President Bill Clinton and had previously dismissed a racketeering suit filed against Hillary Clinton.
It remains to be seen what sort of success this lawsuit might have in imposing some measure of accountability on the alleged anti-Trump conspirators, but at the very least, the suit is useful in piecing together all of the disparate elements of the apparent and obvious effort to “get Trump” that sometimes get forgotten about or overlooked by the general public — in no small part due to biased and selective media coverage.
