Trump says historic agreement between Kosovo and Serbia ‘made the world safer’

The Trump administration has another international victory to tout ahead of Election Day.

In a statement this week, the president announced the historic accomplishment of brokering normalized economic relations between Serbia and Kosovo.

“Took a step towards peace”

Trump’s remarks on the matter came on Friday as he was accompanied by the president of Serbia and prime minister of Kosovo.

“I’m pleased to announce a truly historic commitment,” he said in remarks from the Oval Office. “Serbia and Kosovo have each committed to economic normalization.”

The development signals an end to a decade of tensions and conflict between the two Balkan states. Trump’s focus on economic growth benefiting both countries has been cited as a motivating factor for the landmark negotiations.

Vice President Mike Pence announced the latest “historic day” for the administration in a tweet he posted on Friday.

“After a violent and tragic history”

“Under President [Trump’s] leadership, Serbia & Kosovo took a step towards peace and committed to Economic Normalization,” Pence wrote. “Kosovo will also recognize Israel & Serbia has pledged to move its Embassy to Jerusalem!”

While the nations still likely still have a long and rocky path to true peace, this is undoubtedly a tangible step in the right direction. The president weighed in with his own statement celebrating the move.

“After a violent and tragic history, and years of failed negotiations, my administration proposed a new way of bridging the divide,” he said. “By focusing on job creation and economic growth, the two countries were able to reach a major breakthrough — something that nobody thought was going to be possible.”

“Made the world safer”

Predicting that the effort will “work out very well,” Trump said the U.S. will continue “working with them on economic cooperation” across a range of issues.

Along with Kosovo’s agreement to normalize economic relations with Israel, Trump announced that the talks have “made the world safer.”

Of course, Trump’s critics are likely to continue portraying the Trump administration as ineffective both at home and abroad. Among those Americans paying attention to major developments like this one, however, it is clear that nothing could be further from the truth.
