Politico apparently jumped the gun earlier this week with a post reporting that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden had selected U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) as his running mate.
While the campaign dismissed the claim and the publication blamed a “technical error,” President Donald Trump has since announced that he believes Harris would be a “fine choice” to fill out the Democratic Party’s ticket.
Trump’s remarks came during a White House news conference this week in response to a reporter’s question on the topic.
“Great respect for her”
“I think she’d be a fine choice, Kamala Harris,” he said. “She’d be a fine choice.”
Whether Politico based its piece on information not yet authorized for release or erroneously published a placeholder graphic to be used upon Biden’s announcement remains a mystery. The flub was just the latest form of grist for the rumor mill, however.
Harris has long been included among the candidates believed to be on Biden’s shortlist of potential running mates.
The former vice president was recently photographed with a list of talking points in support of Harris, who had been a spirited rival during the Democratic presidential primary race.
“Biden held notes that were captured by an AP photographer. Harris’ name was scrawled across the top, followed by five talking points.
“Do not hold grudges.” “Campaigned with me & Jill.” “Talented.” “Great help to campaign.” “Great respect for her.” https://t.co/OnNNNxoW1e

Harris’ political baggage
While Harris checks off a lot of the boxes Biden likely wants in a running mate, there are a few reasons she could be a “fine choice” from Trump’s perspective.
For starters, her record as a prosecutor has come under intense scrutiny from her party’s progressive wing.
Furthermore, since she represents California, she does not present the possibility of delivering a crucial swing state for Biden. California is expected to be a deep-blue state this November regardless of which running mate he chooses.
Considering his advanced age and moderate position on a number of issues, Biden’s running mate could have a big impact on the race. Whether Harris is the top contender remains to be seen, but Trump and many in the GOP appear to hope that she is.
