Trump advises GOP to embrace MAGA platform ‘if they want to win’ in 2022

In a wide-ranging interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday, former President Donald Trump sat for his first televised interview since leaving the White House. The pair covered a variety of topics, including the upcoming 2022 midterm elections and Trump’s plans to assist the Republican Party’s quest to reclaim majority control in Congress.

With an eye toward that goal, Trump warned the GOP that, “if they want to win” in 2022, they needed to fully embrace and run on his “America First” platform and “Make America Great Again” agenda.

That prospect is likely quite worrisome to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), given the fact that, despite predictions that Democrats would increase their majority in the House and easily take control of the Senate, Democrats nearly lost control of the House and barely managed a tie in the Senate.

“To win and win big,” GOP must embrace MAGA

Taking note of the principles Trump espoused within America First and MAGA, Hannity asked, “Should this now be the Republican Party agenda? Should anybody that wants to run for the House or the Senate — should they take this ‘Make America Great’ agenda and fight for those things that you fought for the four years you were president?”

“If they want to win, yes,” Trump replied.

The former president pointed out that the Republican Party expanded under his leadership and specifically noted how well he had done with Hispanic voters, particularly along the southern border in Texas, in large part due to his tough immigration policies and protections for American business owners and workers.

“If you want to win and win big, you have to do that. You have to do it,” Trump reiterated. He went on to assert that his involvement in leading the GOP in the 2020 elections is what led to the party greatly surpassing expectations and nearly regaining the House and holding the Senate.

Fox News noted that Trump, at one point and in reference to the 2020 results, said that “Nancy Pelosi almost lost her job over” the shared America First and MAGA platform espoused by him and other Republicans.

Trump “very seriously” considering 2024

At another point in the interview, Trump discussed the “really good chance” that Republicans would reclaim the House and perhaps even the Senate in 2022, and revealed that he was working with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and others and was “all in” and willing to do whatever was necessary toward achieving that goal.

As for his potential plans for another run at the presidency in 2024, Trump initially demurred that it wasn’t for “a long time yet” to decide but nonetheless said, “I am looking at it very seriously — beyond seriously.”
