Honestly, it is hard to remember when the 2nd Circuit Court had anything but a liberal slant.
Fortunately, for the immediate future, that is no longer true as a recent Trump appointment has reversed that trend and flipped the New York-based 2nd Circuit to a conservative majority.
Senate Judiciary doing its job
A huge priority for Donald Trump when he won this presidency was to appoint as many conservative judges to the courts as possible to flip these circuit courts from liberal to conservative.
So far, Trump has appointed close to 50 judges to the courts, with many of those judges turning the ideology of the court completely around. The good news is that there are still close to a dozen vacancies with several more seats expected to open up from retirement before Trump leaves office.
In the case of the 2nd Circuit, the appointment and approval of Steven Menashi officially gives conservative a slight edge on this court. While Trump gets credit for this, so does our Senate Judiciary Committee.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer raged at Menashi’s appointment, claiming, “Mr. Menashi is one of the most contemptible nominees to come before the Senate in all my time in this body. He would be a disgrace, a disgrace to the seat once held by the great Thurgood Marshall.”
But Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) took over the committee at the beginning of the year and he has pushed through just about every nomination Trump put before him, including Menashi, who was confirmed by a 51-41 vote.
More to come
The 2nd Circuit is not the first court Trump has turned over, either. Earlier this year, some of Trump’s appointments turned the 3rd Circuit away from the liberal trend.
Now, Trump has his sights set on the 11th Circuit Court. That should happen sooner rather than later, as there are currently two nominations in front of the Judiciary that could flip that court very quickly.
If and when nominees Barbara Logoa and Robert Luck are confirmed, that court will officially have a conservative lean.
Democrats can cry about Graham and Trump all they want, but they have nobody to blame but their very own Barack Obama. Obama left these seats unfilled when he left the White House and Donald Trump was more than happy to fill them up for him.
This is a huge accomplishment because liberal judges have made it very clear over the last two years that justice is the furthest thing from their interests.
