Trump reverses course on Senate impeachment trial

After the House voted on the articles of impeachment, President Donald Trump was adamant he wanted a full trial to prove he was innocent.

Now, with everything that is happening in Iran, Republicans in the White House say that Trump has reversed course and now thinks a quick resolution would be preferable in order to focus on more important issues.

Swift resolution

It was only several weeks ago when Trump stated that he wanted to have his own cast of witnesses called to exonerate him in the impeachment trial. Our world is a far different place today than it was just those few weeks ago.

Today, we are on the cusp of war with Iran over a back-and-forth between the two countries that recently led to a strike against Iran’s top general. His death has left Iran reeling and looking for revenge.

Clearly, dealing with impeachment and trying to keep all of the unrest in balance is a task that would be difficult for anyone.

With all of that in mind, President Trump now just wants to get the trial over with so he can put his full attention on far more important matters.

“It’s better just to get it over with. With everything that is going on in the Middle East, it’s irresponsible to keep this hanging on,” a Republican leadership source told the Washington Examiner.

“The president’s view is that this is a scam and the sooner we get it behind us and on to the real work of the American people, the better,” a White House official told the Examiner.

Where is the support?

When then-President Barack Obama took out Osama bin Laden, every American in this country stood up and applauded, regardless of political affiliation.

Qassem Soleimani was also a terrorist leader, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans. His “general” title doesn’t negate the fact that he was the leader of a designated terror group.

However, instead of uniting and supporting our president, Democrats are trying to make Trump out to be a war criminal. Democrats are relentless in their mission to destroy Trump, as their response to the Soleimani strike shows.

To that point, Trump is right, as the path of expediency may be the best route simply because no matter what witnesses are called and regardless of the outcome, Democrats will never cease their partisan attacks against him.
