Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has been caught in a range of mental lapses and public gaffes throughout the 2020 campaign.
His apparent struggle to articulate one key phrase during a recent stop in Pennsylvania, however, quickly became fodder for the social media arm of President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign.
“I’ll lead an effective strategy”
The incident occurred on Oct. 24 during a rally in Dallas, though in the immediate aftermath there appeared to be little attention paid to the clear verbal stumble.
Days later, however, the Trump campaign took to Twitter in an effort to skewer the former vice president, who has notably struggled to overcome a nagging stutter.

“Four more years of George”
About 10 minutes into the speech, which Biden was reading from a prompter, he attempted to read a line written for him: “I’ll lead an effective strategy to mobilize international pressure.”
He trailed off toward the end, however, in what the Trump campaign simply dismissed as “[unintelligible]” while Breitbart estimated his utterance to be “truaninonashufodopressure.” This was hardly an isolated incident, of course, with Biden caught in another embarrassing lapse last week during which he appeared to forget his GOP rival’s name.
“Four more years of George, er, George, er, he – we’re going to find ourselves in a position where, if Trump gets elected, we’re going to be in a different world,” Biden said.
Earlier this week, he called running mate Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, “Kamala’s wife.”
Even as the Biden campaign has largely kept the nominee sheltered from difficult media encounters and campaign appearances amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, he has nonetheless been lambasted on too many occasions for verbal slipups and missteps.
Although there might be some element of comedy in such reports, there is also cause for concern. Not only for Biden’s well-being, but for the nation he could soon be elected to lead for the next four years.
As Trump tweeted in September: “Great! Biden is finally being forced out of his basement. Now you’ll be able to see what is going on ‘up there’. He may do some ‘limited’ campaigning. Basement Biden is no longer playing well in the Polls!”
