‘He became a different man’: Trump blasts Barr during CPAC speech

When former President Donald Trump selected Bill Barr to serve as attorney general, some pundits theorized that he would effectively investigate and prosecute alleged wrongdoing.

As Trump alleged during his recent speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, however, Barr fell far short of those expectations.

“They weren’t held responsible”

The ex-president asserted that he was “disappointed that Garr was unable to hold anyone accountable for the countless abuses of power by the Democrats.”

In attempting to explain the former attorney general’s actions, Trump suggested that Barr was a “different man” after Democrats mounted incessant attacks on him and attempted to smear his reputation.

Trump’s speech also included references to the many political attacks launched at him, including the “scam” investigation of alleged Russian collusion in the 2016 presidential election.

He concluded that none of the perpetrators has face appropriate consequences, asserting: “Not the authors of the phone dossier, they weren’t held responsible. Not the women who slandered and lied and defamed [Supreme Court Justice] Brett Kavanaugh. Not any of the numerous criminal referrals for lying to Congress over and over again. Not any of the illegal leakers, not any of the people that were responsible for corrupting our elections.”

The blame lies with Barr, Trump concluded.

“He just didn’t want to do it”

“He wanted nothing to do with it,” the former president said. “He just didn’t want to do it. But perhaps it’s understandable because he did become a different man. I always liked him, but I said: ‘Bill, you got to move your ass. Our country is under attack.'”

After Democrats “viciously stated that they wanted to impeach him,” Trump said that Barr’s outlook on his job changed considerably.

“They went wild,” Trump said of Democratic leaders. “‘We want to impeach him. We’re going to impeach Bill Barr. We’re going to impeach him.’ He became different. I understand that. I didn’t become different. I got impeached twice. I didn’t change. I became worse.”

As the Washington Examiner reported, Barr was widely described as a Trump “loyalist” early on in his stint as attorney general. By the time 2020 rolled around, however, things seemed much different — and Trump believes Democratic threats of impeachment and investigation were to blame.
