Trump aide says RFK Jr. running mate report is 'fake news'

 January 29, 2024

One of former President Donald Trump's top aides says that the recent report claiming that Trump asked Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be his running mate in 2024 is "fake news."

The aide, according to the New York Postis Chris LaCivita, one of Trump's top advisers.

This comes after a separate report from the Post, which claimed that Trump's 2024 campaign team previously reached out to Kennedy asking him if he would be willing to be Trump's running mate.

There will be more on this report in a moment. But, first, we'll look at LaCivitia's social media post.

Not going to happen

LaCivita posted a social media message on Saturday in which he claimed that Trump's campaign never asked Kennedy to be Trump's running mate in the upcoming general election.

LaCivita wrote:

This is 100% FAKE NEWS - NO ONE from the Trump Campaign ever approached RFK jr (or ever will) - one of the most LIBERAL and radical environmentalists in the country. For all the fake news- update your stories.

Another question, of course, is whether Trump is considering making Kennedy his running mate.

Based on LaCivita's post - particularly the part where he wrote that Kennedy is "one of the most LIBERAL and radical environmentalists in the country" - one would have to think that the answer is "no," Trump is not considering making Kennedy his running mate.

Background

Earlier in the day on Saturday, the Post published a story claiming that Trump "made preliminary overtures" to Kennedy about becoming his running mate.

The outlet reported:

Trump operatives expressed an interest in Kennedy early on, but it was all premature,” said one person familiar with the matter, adding that it was “right out of the box when Bobby announced” in April 2023 he was running for president.

The Post added, "Anything’s possible. I wouldn’t write it off by any means,” the insider continued."

This is what prompted the response from Lacivita.

Speculation about Trump's potential running mates continues because Trump just dominated the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary and because Trump continues to dominate 2024 polling. Trump has yet to reveal his pick. But, it appears that the frontrunners likely include Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, U.S. Sens. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Tim Scott (R-SC), and others.
