Top Dem says Hunter Biden's prosecution is 'legally justified'

 December 11, 2023

A Democratic member of the U.S. Senate just expressed his belief that the prosecution of Hunter Biden is "legally justified."

The congressman is U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), who is usually a staunch ally of President Joe Biden.

Murphy, according to the New York Postmade the remark during an appearance over the weekend on NBC's Meet the Press. Take a look:

"Legally justified"

During his NBC appearance, McCarthy was asked whether he believes that the prosecution of Hunter Biden is political.

Murphy replied, "I think it’s legally justified. I think this is a very troubled individual who has - who has done things that are worthy of prosecution, and so I look forward to that case continuing."

Murphy, here, is essentially contradicting the narrative that Hunter Biden and his allies have been pushing, which is that the prosecution of him is political. Accordingly, this has to be particularly bad news for Biden that Murphy - one of President Joe Biden's top allies - is on board with the prosecution of the president's son.

Murphy, however, did try to get around this seeming inconsistency - that is, supporting Hunter Biden's prosecution while also supporting another term for President Biden.

Murphy said:

Ultimately, the American people understand that Hunter Biden is not going to be on the ballot next fall — that Joe Biden is going to be on the ballot, and that this is a president who has led an economic recovery that has been pretty unprecedented. That’s I think going to be what matters to the American people.

Background

Murphy's remarks come after it was announced, last week, that Hunter Biden has been indicted in California on criminal tax charges.

Fox News reported: "The indictment Hunter Biden's failure to pay nearly $200,000 of income tax in the year 2019."

The 53-year-old Hunter Biden is now facing as many as 17 years of imprisonment for the charges, which include three felonies and six misdemeanors.

Hunter Biden, in a post-indictment interview, claimed that the charges are political, and he even went so far as to claim that Republicans are "trying to kill him."

The Republicans, for their part, are skeptical about these latest charges. They are arguing that it is no coincidence that the charges came as Hunter Biden was trying to get out of providing private testimony to Congress about the Biden family business.
