Rep. Rashida Tlaib to deliver far-left progressive rebuttal to President Biden’s State of the Union address

Whenever a sitting president delivers a State of the Union address to Congress, as President Joe Biden is set to do on March 1, a member of the opposition usually delivers a short rebuttal speech immediately afterward.

There will actually be two rebuttal speeches to Biden’s address, as a member of the Democratic Party’s far-left progressive wing, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) will do so in addition to the customary speech from a Republican, Breitbart reported.

Tlaib, a member of the leftist “Squad” in Congress, will be delivering a rebuttal on behalf of the Marxist Working Families Party, and it is expected that she will use the opportunity to slam Republicans — as well as certain “moderate” and “centrist” Democrats — for standing in the way of the far-left agenda that has been stalled in the legislative body.

A preview of Tlaib’s speech

Politico reported that it had exclusively obtained a summary of Rep. Tlaib’s prepared remarks and, as suspected, she will express support for the progressive social spending and climate change portions of President Biden’s proposed Build Back Better legislation.

At the same time, she will also launch a verbal assault on both Republicans and “a handful of intransigent Democrats” who have effectively blocked Biden’s agenda from passage in the Senate — such as Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), who Tlaib is expected to call out by name.

In addition, Tlaib will reportedly call upon Biden to use his executive authority to take action on student loan debt and lower the poverty threshold to make more Americans eligible for federal benefits. She will also urge voters across the country to elect more far-left progressives like herself in the next congressional elections.

Speech could worsen Democratic infighting

“No one fought harder for Build Back Better and a pro-democracy agenda than progressives,” Tlaib said in a statement to the outlet. “The work is unfinished and we’re not giving up on what our communities deserve. We need to get as much done for the people as we can this year, and elect a majority that can deliver for working families in 2023.”

Politico noted that Tlaib’s speech would likely serve to highlight — and potentially even worsen — the already existing “deep rifts” between the Democratic Party’s far-left progressive wing and the more moderate establishment wing.

The timing couldn’t be worse, either, as the party is hoping to tamp down divisions and project unity ahead of the midterm elections in November.

GOP rebuttal to come from Iowa Gov. Reynolds

As for the more traditional rebuttal speech from the opposition party, The Hill reported that Republican leaders picked Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) to counter President Biden’s address this year.

She was reportedly chosen by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) due to how she handled the COVID-19 pandemic in her state as well as education system reforms she has overseen.

“The Biden Administration is governing from the far-left, ignoring the problems of working-class Americans while pushing an agenda that stifles free speech, free thought, and economic freedom,” Reynolds said in a statement. “The American people have had enough, but there is an alternative and that’s what I look forward to sharing on Tuesday evening.”
