‘Game of Thrones’ actor Andrew Dunbar dies suddenly in Ireland

A young actor who starred in HBO’s acclaimed series Game of Thrones (GoT), Andrew Dunbar, died of unknown causes at his home in Belfast, Ireland, on Christmas Eve, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Dunbar, who was only in his 30s, primarily played the role of a body double for GoT character “Theon Greyjoy,” who was normally portrayed by actor Alfie Allen. He also served as an extra on that series as well as in a handful of other programs.

Passing confirmed

The actor’s death was confirmed by the agency that represented him, The Extras Dept., which announced in a social media post: “We have so many fond memories of the years Andrew worked with us.”

“He was so versatile, we could cast him in anything, he was such a talented performer he would always end up being featured, and he was so adored that he was always requested by productions again and again,” the agency said. “He’ll be remembered for his roles as a Stark and Theon Greyjoy’s double on Game of Thrones, a corrupt Police Officer on Line of Duty, the poor fella cornered by Colum on Derry Girls, and a Rebel on Krypton to name a few.”

Alfie Allen offers condolences

According to Deadline, Allen also issued a statement following the death of his friend and stand-in on the GoT series.

“Andrew was an actor who was also a stand-in as Theon on GoT. Extremely shocked and saddened to hear of his passing,” Allen posted to social media.

He added: “To lose a loved one so young, I can only imagine what his family are going through. RIP Andrew.”

Noted versatility

In addition to serving as a body double for Allen’s character, Dunbar also played the role of an extra when necessary on the series, most notably as an allied bannerman of the central Stark family in the pivotal “Battle of the Bastards” episode.

According to the New York Post’s Page Six, his ability to take on multiple roles resulted in Dunbar having “stood out” from the “thousands” of other extras in the series, at least in the view of Pamela Smyth, who was in charge of Crowd Makeup for GoT.

“Even among the thousands of extras that came through the crowd room on ‘Thrones’ — Andrew always stood out,” Smyth said. “Always professional and mannerly with a big broad beaming smile. A beautiful soul — he will be missed by all the ‘GoT’ family.”

A tragic loss

There is little doubt that Dunbar’s tragic death at a young age will shock and disappoint those who knew him well.

Hopefully, the cause of his untimely demise will eventually be made known, if only to grant a sense of closure to those who are mourning his passing.
