Reality TV star Nelson Thomas ("The Challenge") reported on social media that he would have his foot amputated exactly one year to the day from the accident in Austin, Texas that injured it.

Since March 5, 2023, Thomas has had several procedures on the foot to fix the problems and heal it, but has now resigned himself to the amputation.

The surgery is scheduled for March 5, 2024, exactly a year after the accident, when strangers who witnessed the crash pulled him from his flaming vehicle.

“March 5th, 2023 remains vivid in my memory, a persistent presence in my thoughts. I consciously embrace it as the initiation of a new chapter. Opting for amputation, I am determined to own March 5th and redefine its significance in my life,” he wrote to his Instagram page.

His process

Thomas's blood alcohol level was .178 after the crash, more than twice the legal limit of .08.

He said at the time that he had only had two or three drinks. He was charged with a Class A misdemeanor.

On Instagram, Thomas said he had consulted multiple doctors about his foot after it rebroke in September and a stem cell procedure failed in October.

He also consulted some in the amputee community to find out how they have adapted and thrived after amputation.

At peace

“I think I’m at peace with it, and it’s time,” he said. “It’s time. I’m ready to move on with my life, and I’m ready to see the other side of the world.”

“Get ready, amputation world! I’m on my way! I am scheduled for surgery on March 5th, 2024,” he posted on Instagram.

The post included audio from his doctor who explained the procedure and what it entails.

His castmates and followers on Instagram gave him a lot of encouraging and supportive comments in response to his decision.

Over the weekend before the announcement, he posted a video of himself working out in the gym as he had done many times in the past.

"Let's embrace the challenges, face the storm head on, and conquer adversity. I won't run away. I'll run towards my challenges, leaving a lasting impact that people won't forget...." he wrote in the caption.
