Texas to bus illegal immigrants to the Capitol

The governor of Texas is taking the illegal immigrants that the Biden administration has released in his state and shipping them to Washington D.C., Breitbart News reports

Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced the plan on Wednesday. It is part of a larger strategy to deal with the surge of illegal border crossings that are expected in the coming months as the Biden administration puts an end to Title 42 expulsions.

Title 42 is the Trump-era provision that has been used to expel illegal border crossers during the coronavirus pandemic. It is currently scheduled to expire on May 23.

It is predicted that when it does expire the number of illegal border crossings will jump from 8,000 per day to 18,000 per day.

Abbott’s “better idea”

Texas, especially the state’s border cities, has been dealing with a large influx of illegal immigrants. As a result, some of these border cities began busing illegal immigrants who have been released there to San Antonio. This is what inspired Abbott’s plan.

“I said I got a better idea,” Abbott said on Wednesday. “As opposed to busing these people to San Antonio, let’s continue the ride all the way to Washington D.C.”

Abbott added, “we are taking them to the United States Capitol where the Biden administration will be able to more immediately address the needs of the people that they are allowing to come across our border.”

The Texas Division of Emergency Management is going to be in charge of carrying out this order. It has put out a statement saying that it is getting ready to “use as many buses as [needed].”

The White House responds

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked to respond to Abbott’s plan on Thursday. She called it a “publicity stunt.”

“I think it’s pretty clear that this is a publicity stunt,” Psaki said. “I know that the governor of Texas, or any state, does not have the legal authority to compel anyone to get on a bus.”

Psaki added, “his own office admits that a migrant would need to voluntarily be transported and he can’t compel them to because, again, enforcement of our country’s immigration laws lies with the federal government and not a state.”

Abbott has yet to respond to Psaki’s statement.
