Texas governor accuses Harris of ‘ignoring the real problem areas’ as VP plans trip to border

After more than three months as the Biden administration’s “border czar,” Vice President Kamala Harris is finally paying a visit to the nation’s overwhelmed southern border. But her detractors still aren’t satisfied.

Reports indicate that the part of the U.S.–Mexico border border Harris intends to visit isn’t one of the spots where migration is spinning out of control. Now, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is calling the VP out for continuing to avoid the “real problem areas,” Breitbart reports.

Harris heads south

According to Politico, it was first announced this week that Vice President Harris would accompany Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Friday for a visit to El Paso, Texas, ostensibly as part of her broader assignment to address the “root causes” of northward migration to the U.S. from Central American nations.

“Earlier this year, the President asked the Vice President to oversee our diplomatic efforts to address the root causes of migration from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras,” Harris’ spokesperson, Symone Sanders, said, as Politico reported. “As a part of this ongoing work, the Vice President traveled to Guatemala and Mexico earlier this month and will travel to El Paso on Friday.”

The development follows three months of sharp criticism from many Republicans and even some Democrats over Harris’ repeated refusal to address — much less actually visit — portions of the southern border that remain in crisis amid a surge in migration that many feel was brought on by President Joe Biden’s policies.

The news also came just days after it was revealed that former President Donald Trump would soon join Gov. Abbott for a visit of his own to the border to highlight the policy failures of his successor, Politico noted.

“She will fail”

As Abbott tees up a visit from the 45th president, he isn’t letting the administration that followed Trump off the hook. In a statement Wednesday, the Republican governor indicated that El Paso is well-equipped to handle the influx of migrants, while other parts of the border are in far more dire straights.

“Vice President Harris is ignoring the real problem areas along our southern border that are not protected by the border wall and are being overrun by the federal government’s ill-thought-out open border policies,” Abbott said, according to Breitbart.

“She will fail in her mission if she refuses to speak to residents of the Del Rio sector whose homes and ranches are being overrun by gangs and smugglers,” he added.

The governor went on to note that, in the three months that have elapsed since Harris was first tapped to lead on the immigration issue, “Texans have had their homes broken into, property damaged, and guns pointed at their heads as cartels, smugglers, and human traffickers profit off the Biden Administration’s reckless open-border policies.”

In the federal government’s absence, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has “arrested over 1,700 criminals, apprehended over 41,000 migrants, and seized enough fentanyl to kill over 21 million people,” Abbott said.

“Texas has been and continues to step up to protect Texans and Americans,” he declared. It’s a shame the White House isn’t following suit.
