The woman accusing Joe Biden of sexually assaulting her in 1993 has just suffered a major setback in her case against the former vice president.
Fox News reported over the weekend that Tara Reade’s attorney, Douglas H. Wigdor, is dropping her as a client as controversy continues to swirl over her claim that Biden assaulted her in a Capitol hallway when she worked for the then-senator’s office.
A major setback
Ever since Reade went public with her allegations against Biden, her story has been more or less been dismissed by most mainstream media outlets. When she expanded upon her allegations, she only came under even more scrutiny for having changed her story.
Now, with new reports coming out questioning her background, Reade’s attorney has reportedly decided to cut ties with her.
After dropping Reade as a client, Wigdor provided a statement to The New York Times wherein he stated that the fact that he is no longer representing Reade doesn’t demonstrate his opinion on whether she was sexually assaulted by Biden or not, as Fox News reported.
The prominent attorney also took one more shot at the media for the manner in which the Reade story was covered before bowing out.
“Much of what has been written about Ms. Reade is not probative of whether then-Senator Biden sexually assaulted her, but rather is intended to victim-shame and attack her credibility on unrelated and irrelevant matters,” he remarked to the Times, according to Fox.
The attorney went on: “We have and will continue to represent survivors regardless of their alleged predator’s status or politics.”
Case falling apart?
As more time passes, Reade’s backstory has taken some significant hits, and they’re going to hurt her credibility. Indeed, Reade’s claims regarding her education have come under scrutiny, as has her claim about being a “domestic violence expert,” as Fox noted in its weekend report.
Reade has also touted herself as having a degree from Antioch University — but while it was confirmed that she attended Antioch, school officials have not been able to confirm she ever graduated, Fox reported.
What’s more, according to Fox, defense attorneys in Monterey County, California are now scrambling to see if she provided false credentials to the court when she previously testified against their clients.
This does not necessarily prove one way or another that Reade was also lying about the allegations she made against Biden — but it will surely not help her case.
