Actress Suzanne Somers has died as the result of cancer.
According to Page Six, Somers died on Sunday at the age of 76. Somers' passing occurred the day before her 77th birthday, which would have been on Monday, Oct. 16, 2023.
The news of Somers' passing has been confirmed by R. Couri Hay, Somers' longtime publicist.
"Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Oct. 15," Hay said, adding that Somers, at the time of her passing "was surrounded by her loving husband, Alan [Hamel], her son, Bruce, and her immediate family."
Hay revealed that the cause of Somers' passing was indeed cancer. Hay said that Somers "survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years." But, it appears that the cancer, unfortunately, finally caught up with Somers.
Hay said that Somers' family was expecting to celebrate her birthday on Monday but that, "instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life."
Hay ended the statement by thanking Somers' "millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly." Hay said that "a private family burial will take place this week, with a memorial to follow next month."
For those who have followed Somers for the past couple of decades, it will come as no surprise that she had cancer. This is because, according to People magazine, Somers has been very open about her battle with cancer.
Per the outlet, "The Three's Company actress had been very open about her health struggles over the years, including her 2000 breast cancer diagnosis. She also battled several other forms of cancer throughout her life."
People goes on to provide a timeline of Somers' battle with cancer, going all the way back to the 1970s. People quotes Somers, herself, in 2020, as saying:
Even when I was Chrissy on Three's Company, I had had cancer three times. They call it severe hyperplasia in your uterus. I didn't make a big deal about it.
Somers, at the time, also revealed that she had a malignant melanoma on her back when she was in her 30s. Then, it was in 2001 that Somers revealed that she had already been battling breast cancer for a year.
The cancer did clear up in 2007, after significant treatment measures. The cancer, however, returned in July 2023. And, it appears that, this time, it claimed Somers' life.
Somers' acting career goes back to the 1960s.
She is particularly remembered for her role in the film American Graffiti and for her roles in various television shows, including Three's Company and Step by Step.
