Report: Multiple Georgia counties deleted surveillance video of ballot drop boxes after 2020 election

Believing they were following the rules, it appears that several Georgia counties deleted surveillance video of ballot drop box locations 30 days after the 2020 election, which could hamper an investigation into whether illegal ballot harvesting took place.

According to a new report from Just the News, federal law requires officials to “retain and preserve” all records of federal elections for 22 months. But emergency rules set by the State Elections Board ahead of the 2020 race said that the footage only needed to be kept for 30 days or until all election challenges were resolved.

Now, huge counties in the Peach State like Fulton County and Cobb County say they no longer have the footage, just as Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has opened an investigation into possible ballot harvesting.

“We took direction from the Secretary of State and State Election Board, assuming they were not implementing a Rule contrary to law,” the Cobb County elections office told Just the News. “Drop boxes were established under an emergency order from the Governor.”

Investigation underway

Election integrity watchdog group True the Vote said in the Nov. 30 complaint that prompted Raffensperger’s investigation that it had¬†collected footage of many drop box locations.

In addition to video footage of the drop box locations, the group also told Just the News it has testimony from a man who claims he was paid thousands of dollars to collect ballots in the Atlanta area for both November 2020 and January 2021 runoff elections.

Raffensperger said he considers the claims credible, which is why he opened the investigation.

Not having the drop box surveillance footage available could impede the investigation or make it more difficult to discern whether widespread ballot harvesting took place, as Just the News notes.

The bottom line

Indeed, President Joe Biden only won Georgia by about 12,000 votes, as confirmed by a recount. At that number, ballot harvesting could have conceivably made the difference between a Biden win and a Donald Trump one in the state.

Trump supporters have long alleged that Biden did not win fairly, but once the vote was certified, there was little anyone could do to change the outcome — and that remains the case.

For the sake of future elections, however, it is important to know the truth of what happened.

We can only hope Raffensperger can get to the bottom of all this.
