There was a mass shooting at an Independence Day parade in a Chicago-area suburb of Highland Park in Illinois on Monday and, as if on cue, countless Democrats immediately resumed their incessant demand for stricter gun control laws.
However, virtually all of the new restrictions that Democrats have demanded to limit Second Amendment-protected gun rights are already in place in that city and state, yet failed to prevent this terrible tragedy from occurring, Breitbart reported.
Those restrictions include, among other things, a ban on so-called “assault weapons” and “large-capacity” magazines, licensing requirements, “red flag” pre-emptive confiscation laws, and a waiting period prior to taking possession of a purchased firearm.
Shooter used legal rifle from elevated rooftop to murder parade-goers
According to USA Today, the suspected shooter was taken into custody Monday night and has been identified as Robert “Bobby” Crimo III, an aspiring rap artist known for posting violent songs and videos on social media.
During the parade in Highland Park, Crimo is alleged to have taken an elevated position on a nearby rooftop and then fired down into the crowd of parade-goers, killing at least seven people and injuring dozens more. He is then alleged to have disguised himself as a woman to escape the area immediately after the shooting, though he was arrested “without incident” about eight hours later just a few miles away from where the attack occurred.
According to the police, the suspect had planned the shooting for several weeks and recently purchased two semiautomatic rifles legally and in his own name from two different gun stores in the Chicago area. One rifle was found at the scene, the second in his car, and other legally purchased firearms were found during a search of his home.
Gun control laws already in place didn’t stop shooter
The fact that all of the alleged murderer’s firearms were purchased legally would seem to suggest that the Democratic desired gun control regime, which is fully in place in Illinois and Highland Park, doesn’t actually work to prevent horrific mass shootings by those who wish to perpetrate such evil, Breitbart noted.
Indeed, anti-gun groups like Everytown for Gun Safety — which ranks Illinois as having the sixth-toughest gun control laws in the nation — and the group led by former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-AZ) — which gave Illinois an “A-” grade for gun control — have praised the state for implementing the exact sort of gun control regulations they want to see nationwide.
First, Highland Park has a local ordinance that outlaws so-called “assault weapons” and “large-capacity” magazines, as do surrounding Lake County and neighboring Cook County, but that didn’t stop Crimo from obtaining the AR-15-style rifle he used to commit mass murder.
Nor was he stopped by the onerous burden on legal firearms purchases, which include requirements like first obtaining a state license to merely possess a firearm, a federal and state background check, and a mandatory waiting period prior to taking possession of the newly purchased weapon, or the state’s “red flag” law that allows for weapons to be seized from somebody believed to present a danger to themselves or others.
He was also not dissuaded by regulations mandating the safe storage and transportation of firearms, prohibitions against “open carry” of rifles, or a host of other gun control measures imposed by the state, county, and city — to say nothing of the fact that murder and assault with a deadly weapon are highly illegal.
Ironically enough, with regard to Highland Park’s stringent “assault weapons” ban, the outlet noted that the local ordinance had actually been challenged as unconstitutional but was allowed to stand after the Supreme Court refused to take up the case in 2015.
