GOP Rep. Steube hospitalized following accident while cutting tree limbs on Florida property

A Republican congressman from Florida was involved in a serious accident that left him hospitalized on Wednesday.

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) was said to have sustained “several injuries” while doing some work on his property in the afternoon, according to The Washington Times.

Following the initial report with few details, however, it has since been revealed that Steube’s were “not life-threatening” and that he was in “good spirits” and making “progress” toward recovery.

Accidental fall while cutting tree limbs

Wednesday evening, the Florida representative’s official Twitter account posted: “Congressman Steube was involved in an accident on his property late this afternoon and has sustained several injuries. We will provide additional updates when possible. Please pray for the Congressman and his family.”

The promised update on the congressman’s condition eventually came in a multi-tweet thread that was posted on Thursday morning, presumably from a member of his staff tweeting on his behalf.

“Thank you to all who continue to pray for Congressman Steube. The Congressman was knocked approximately 25 feet down off a ladder while cutting tree limbs on his Sarasota property yesterday afternoon,” the account stated.

“The Congressman spent the night in the ICU where several serious injuries are still under assessment but not life threatening at this time. He is making progress and in good spirits,” the update continued.

Thankfulness for aide and support

The Thursday morning update on Rep. Steube’s accident shared his expressed gratitude for the “team of doctors, nurses, and medical personnel” who had treated him. It further noted, “We are thankful to the individual who witnessed the fall and immediately called 911, as well as Sarasota County’s Emergency Services for their quick response and transportation.”

“Additionally, our team expresses thanks to members of the media who waited patiently to accurately report the incident before releasing falsities to the public. Accurate updates about Rep. Steube’s current condition will be found on his official Twitter account,” the thread concluded.

Delivery driver witnessed fall, called 911

According to local Fox affiliate WTVT, the individual who witnessed the congressman’s fall after a branch hit his ladder and quickly called 911 has been identified as a delivery driver named Darrell Woodie, who also happens to work as a field representative for Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) and was acquainted with Steube, who happened to be passing through the area when the accident occurred.

Per the audio of the 13-minute-long 911 call that the outlet obtained, Woodie could be heard talking with a “bruised up” and “dazed” Steube and helping him find his phone while they waited for about 10 minutes before paramedics arrived on the scene and transported him to the hospital for treatment of the sustained injuries.

The latest update from the congressman’s account, posted Thursday afternoon, stated: “The Steube family is grateful for the outpouring of well wishes and prayers. Rep. Steube was moved out of the ICU this afternoon. He remains hospitalized under the care of a great team.”
