U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) made national headlines earlier this month when her own party voted to oust her from an influential leadership position in Congress based on her prior critical remarks and actions against former President Donald Trump.
Now, the lawmaker chosen to replace her as House GOP conference chair is using her new platform to accuse House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) of using the COVID-19 pandemic to “coalesce power.”
“Pelosi is not a health official”
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) made her case in an exclusive interview on Thursday with Breitbart News.
Specifically, she cited increased Republican pressure on the speaker to roll back strict rules mandating the use of face masks on the House floor despite recently relaxed guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Speaker Pelosi is not a health official, she should follow the CDC guidelines, and the House physician should follow the CDC guidelines,” Stefanik asserted, according to Breitbart.
She went on to call it “unfortunate” that the California Democrat has “used the pandemic to grab and coalesce power,” suggesting that “the American people are frustrated and starting to see through it.”
For her part, Pelosi seems to be leaning toward keeping the mask mandate in place until all members of Congress have been fully vaccinated. She has also imposed steep fines against a handful of House Republicans deemed to be in violation of the rule.
“People were told to wear a gold star”
Stefanik is hardly the only member of her party with a harsh assessment of Pelosi’s mask rules.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) proposed a measure that would keep House rules in line with the CDC guidelines, but it narrowly failed in a vote that fell along party lines in the Democratic-led chamber.
Pelosi spokesperson Drew Hammill echoed the speaker’s sentiment in his response, asserting: “If Minority Leader McCarthy wants to be maskless on the floor of the House of Representatives, he should get to work vaccinating his members.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) took an even sharper tone, claiming that Pelosi is “mentally ill” for maintaining the mask rule and comparing the practice to the Holocaust, as Newsweek reported.
“You know, we can look back in a time in history where people were told to wear a gold star and they were definitely treated as second-class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany,” she declared.
