The top issues facing the American people right now are inflation and high gas prices, and any politician who fails to recognize and at least pretend to address that is placing their career at grave risk.
Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) may well have fatally damaged her political career after she appeared to make light of record-high gas prices because she recently purchased an expensive electric vehicle, TheBlaze reported.
The potentially politically costly comments from the Michigan senator came during a committee hearing this week during which she bragged about being able to drive past all of the gas stations with exorbitant prices per gallon right now that are simply unsustainable for the vast majority of the American people.
Senator brags “it didn’t matter how high” gas prices are
It was Tuesday during a Senate Finance Committee hearing with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen when the issue of high gas prices came up and Sen. Stabenow made her remarks.
“I do have to say, just on the issue of gas prices, after waiting for a long time to have enough chips in this country to finally get my electric vehicle, I got it and drove it from Michigan to here this last weekend and went by every single gas station, and it didn’t matter how high it was,” the Democratic senator said with a self-satisfied grin.
Stabenow went on to add with a smile, “I’m looking forward to the opportunity for us to move to vehicles that aren’t going to be dependent on the whims of the oil companies and the international markets.”
Meanwhile, tens of millions of poor and working-class American families are being forced to decide how best to stretch their increasingly limited resources at the gas station and grocery store and are in no meaningful way, shape, or form in the market to purchase an expensive new electric vehicle like the wealthy senator.
“Let them buy Teslas!”
The Washington Examiner reported that there was instant backlash on social media to Sen. Stabenow’s blithe remarks about her newfound ability to ignore the high gas prices that most of her constituents must continue to confront on a regular basis.
In the view of some, the senator’s comments were the equivalent of “Let them buy Teslas,” a variation on the infamous “Let them eat cake” quip attributed to French Queen Marie Antoinette upon learning that her citizens were starving — shortly before she was beheaded by revolutionaries.
Many others simply noted how Stabenow’s remarks revealed just how out of touch she was with the current plight of the American people — a problem for which there is no end in sight and that will almost certainly grow worse in the coming weeks and months.
For perspective, the Examiner cited the AAA and reported that the average price for a gallon of gasoline had surged to $4.91 on Tuesday — $0.61 higher than last week and nearly $2 more than last year — and will likely breach the $6 per gallon mark, if not even higher, over the next few weeks and months.
