In his Instagram post, Verástegui wrote, "It is a fact. It is time."
He continued:
After a period of discernment, I made the most important decision of my life: I have just registered with the [National Electoral Institute] my intention as an aspiring independent candidate for the presidency of the Mexican Republic, for the elections on June 2, 2024.
Verástegui went on to say that he is looking to bring change to Mexico.
He wrote:
My fight is for life. My fight is for freedom. It's time to remove the same old people from power. Our country needs a new way of doing politics, to eradicate corruption and impunity. We are on time! Let's go with everything, for our Mexico!
This Instagram announcement follows a four-minute-long video that Verástegui released on X last month. In the video, Verástegui highlighted the various problems that Mexico is facing and he talked about the need to address these problems.
Verástegui is a Mexican actor and singer, who has particularly become well known for his production of the film Sound of Freedom, which is currently the number-one movie in Latin America.
If you have not seen the film, The Washington Examiner reports, "Sound of Freedom details the true story of how former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard quit his DHS job and risked his life to journey into the jungles of Colombia in an effort to save children from sex slavery."
The film was released in theaters on July 4, and it has since garnered over $190 million worldwide. This is a significant success, especially considering that Sound of Freedom is an independent film that only had a budget of $15 million.
Whether Verástegui can translate the film's success into a successful run for the presidency of Mexico is unclear. At the time of this writing, many seem to think that Verástegui is a long shot, at best. But, Verástegui does have some big-name support - including the support of former President Donald Trump.
Trump recently referred to Verástegui as "the next president of Mexico." We'll see if Trump turns out to be right.
