George Soros, an influential progressive philanthropist, has long used his massive wealth to finance various leftist causes. As such, he is an avowed critic of President Donald Trump and has stood in the way of the current administration’s agenda.
As reported by the Washington Times, he is now clinging to the notion that the coronavirus pandemic is a “revolutionary moment” through which the nation will be transformed in ways that would have otherwise been impossible.
“A revolutionary moment”
His revelation came during an interview with Italian-language media outlet La Repubblica on his 90th birthday.
The focus of the piece largely centered around the pandemic and Soros’ belief that it had exposed “fragility” within the European Union that leaves it susceptible to the threats posed by both a growing populist movement as well as China’s communist regime.
On a global scale, however, he identified unique opportunities for radical change — especially within the United States.
“We are in a crisis, the worst crisis in my lifetime since the Second World War,” he said. “I would describe it as a revolutionary moment when the range of possibilities is much greater than in normal times.”
Soros warned that people are “disoriented and scared” amid multiple crises and “do things that are bad for them and for the world.”
“Undermine democracy from within”
Nevertheless, the damage he accuses Trump of inflicting on the nation will soon be over, according to his prediction.
“Even in the United States, a confidence trickster like Trump can be elected president and undermine democracy from within,” he said, according to The Hill. “But in the U.S. you have a great tradition of checks and balances and established rules. And above all you have the Constitution. So I am confident that Trump will turn out to be a transitory phenomenon, hopefully ending in November.”
While he maintained that Trump “remains very dangerous” while in office, largely due to the perception that “he’s fighting for his life and he will do anything to stay in power,” Soros expressed confidence that the president will lose his re-election bid and ultimately face the consequences for alleged constitutional violations.
Of course, for millions of Americans, the president is only “dangerous” to those who represent the swamp he campaigned on draining.
On election day, voters will have to decide between the “revolutionary” future Soros wants to see or the return to law and order promised by the Trump administration.
