Fox News reports that at least eight people are dead after a man drove a vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians near the U.S.-Mexico border. An additional 11 individuals were reportedly injured in the attack.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning outside of the Ozanam Center, which is located in Brownsville, Texas. The city of Brownsville is in the very southern part of Texas, just across the border from Matamoros, Mexico.
The Ozanam Center is a shelter that is currently used for both homeless individuals and migrants in the area. Originally, the center was set up to house refugees from South America.
At about 8:30 on Sunday morning, several individuals were waiting at the bus stop outside of the Ozanam Center when a man drove his vehicle into them.
According to the Daily Wire, "video of the aftermath showed numerous bodies severely disfigured, including victims who had missing limbs, with the road and sidewalk covered in blood."
The eight victims all died at the scene, while the 11 others were taken to nearby hospitals. All eight of the individuals who were killed have been identified as migrants.
Thus far, the suspect is only being identified by the Brownsville Police Department as a Hispanic man.
Following the incident, the suspect was taken into custody. He was then brought to a hospital to receive medical treatment and to be tested for substances. He is under 24-hour surveillance.
Thus far, the suspect has only been charged with reckless driving. Brownsville Police Department Lt. Martin Sandoval, however, says that the incident appears intentional and that more charges are being considered. It appears that the authorities are currently awaiting the results of an ongoing investigation.
As for the suspect's motivation, this also has yet to be revealed. Given where it took place, some are speculating that the attack might have had something to do with the Ozanam Center or the southern border crisis, but this has yet to be confirmed.
In addition to the above incident, Texas also witnessed a mass shooting event that took place at a mall in Allen, Texas, on Saturday.
Here, too, eight people were pronounced dead, in addition to the shooter. A law enforcement officer prevented further casualties by eliminating the shooter.
Here, the suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia. He is said to be a neo-Nazi sympathizer.
Why the identity of some suspects, in events such as these, is released sooner than the identity of others remains unclear.
