Sen. Feinstein comes out in favor of eliminating the filibuster to pass law legalizing abortion

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) just declared her support for eliminating the Senate filibuster in order to allow her and her fellow Democrats to pass legislation legalizing abortion, Breitbart News reports

Feinstein released a statement on the matter on Thursday.

That statement reads:

There is not currently a proposal before the Senate to remove the filibuster to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify the protections of Roe v. Wade. However, if it looks similar to the proposal the Senate previously considered for voting rights, I certainly would vote for it.

“Let me be clear,” Feinstein added. “If it comes down to protecting the filibuster or protecting a woman’s right to choose, there should be no question that I will vote to protect a woman’s right to choose.”

Background

The Democrats are, once again, pushing the elimination of the Senate filibuster in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. The justices overturned Roe in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case in which the court considered the legality of Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban law.

In the majority opinion in Dobbs, the justices made it clear that they are returning the abortion issue to state legislatures where many maintain it belongs.

But, the political left has been going around claiming that the justices have taken away a women’s so-called right to have an abortion. All one has to do is look at those roughly two-dozen states who still allow abortions to take place to see that the justices did no such thing.

Democrats, however, aren’t interested in any of this. They are only interested in rallying their supporters ahead of the coming election. And now, to do so, they are once again pushing the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would legalize abortion at the federal level.

The latest

The problem for the Democrats is the Senate filibuster. This makes it so that 60 votes are needed to pass a piece of non-budgetary legislation. Right now, with the makeup of the Senate being 50 to 50, the Democrats don’t have the votes that they need to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act legitimately.

This is why the Democrats are trying to garner support for the elimination of the filibuster. Many Democrats, including President Joe Biden, have recently come out in favor of doing so.

But, for the filibuster to be eliminated, all Senate Democrats would have to be on board with the idea. And, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) are not.

So, for now, it appears that the filibuster will remain intact and that the Women’s Health Protection Act will not be passed. But, expect that to change in the future once the Democrats get a clear majority in Congress.
