Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is continuing his fiery campaign against the impeachment farce that is set to take place this week.
Paul argued on Fox News over the weekend that if the standard being used by the Democrats to impeach former President Donald Trump were applied, then several Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), would be facing impeachment as well.
“I think if we are going to criminalize speech and somehow impeach everybody who says, oh, go fight to have your voices heard, really we ought to impeach Chuck Schumer then,” Paul said on Fox News Sunday, according to the Washington Examiner.
Paul was specifically referring to an incident that occurred in March 2020 when Schumer, while talking to a crowd in front of the Supreme Court building, named Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, saying, “You released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
Paul said Sunday that “this inflammatory wording, this violent rhetoric of Chuck Schumer, was so bad that the chief justice, who rarely says anything publicly, immediately said this kind of language is dangerous as a mob tried to invade the Supreme Court.”
It all comes as Democrats are attempting to hold Trump directly responsible for the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, accusing him of “inciting an insurrection.”
They have pointed to language that Trump made at the “Stop the Steal” rally on that same day, including, “We fight, we fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore.”
But, as Paul pointed out, “If people want to hold President Trump accountable for language, there has to be a consistent standard.”
Paul argued that “it’s just not fair” that Democrats, like Schumer, are not being held to the same standard.
During his weekend appearance on Fox, Paul also gave a preview of Trump’s legal team’s defense strategy.
According to Paul, the team will show video footage of prominent Democrats making statements similar to if not worse than Trump in order to highlight the double standard at play.
With this in mind, the impeachment trial could backfire on the Democrats. It will certainly be a sight to see.
