With the release of former national security adviser John Bolton’s tell-all memoir, Democrats in Congress have reportedly found a new basis for another investigation of the Trump administration.
According to Breitbart, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who chairs the House intelligence committee, suggested in an interview on Sunday that Bolton could be brought before the panel to testify about claims he made in the book about President Donald Trump.
Schiff appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press and reacted to host Chuck Todd’s reference to prior congressional efforts to secure Bolton’s testimony during an impeachment trial that ended earlier this year with an acquittal in the U.S. Senate.
“Exposed to the light of day”
“We will look at what allegations, like those involving Turkey and other countries, particularly involving China, need to be fleshed out and exposed to the light of day,” the congressman said of Bolton’s book, which he acknowledged he had not yet read. “And then we’ll make our decisions.”
Generally speaking, Schiff argued that lawmakers need “to expose the length and breadth of this president’s depravity and how much it is endangering the country,” explaining that he is in communication with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) over the most appropriate way to move forward.
Todd went on to note the short window of time for any new impeachment probe ahead of November’s presidential election, asking Schiff if his committee could afford to waste any time before pursuing Bolton’s claims.
“I don’t think we should wait if we conclude that there are important things that he says that need to be exposed to the public,” Schiff said. “The public needs to know exactly what they have in this president. A lot of it is not a surprise.”
“Investigation did not cease”
This is not the first time Democratic lawmakers have hinted that they could take another bite of the impeachment apple. In May, a group of party leaders petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court for documents from the probe of former special counsel Robert Mueller.
In a court briefing, the Democrats wrote that the House judiciary committee’s “investigation did not cease with the conclusion of the impeachment trial” and that new evidence not already covered in the previous trial could warrant the recommendation of “new articles of impeachment.”
As for Schiff’s latest investigative push, he said that the “best way to protect the country” from the current administration is to expose Trump’s alleged misconduct.
For Trump’s part, he has asserted that Bolton’s book is both full of lies and contains highly classified information.
Only time will tell whether the most recent tell-all book from a former administration insider gives Democrats enough ammunition to launch another investigation.
