South Dakota, this week, is mourning the loss of one of its key lawmakers
Representative Jim Schaefer, a Republican, was killed in tragic accident in Kennebec.
According to reports, a UTV collided with a car at a local intersection.
Both of the passengers, Schaefer being one of them, were thrown from the UTV at the time of impact.
The woman riding with him was reportedly his fiancé.
Both UTV passengers were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the police report, neither UTV passenger was wearing a seatbelt or a helmet.
There were three people in the car that collided with the UTV.
Police stated all three of them were treated for minor injuries and released.
Based on police reports, Schaefer would appear to have been at fault in the accident, having failed to stop at the intersection.
Just a Good Man
Schaefer first entered public service in 2011.
At that time, he won the seat representing the 21st district.
In 2013, Schaefer would win again, but this time he was serving District 26B.
He would have reached his term limit and been forced to give up his seat at the end of his current term.
The Governor of South Dakota, Dennis Daugaard, had kind words about both the person and the state congressman after hearing of his death.
Daugaard stated, “Jim Schaefer was a quality person and a committed public servant.”
“Jim never sought the limelight, but he always worked hard on behalf of his district and our state,” the Governor added.
Social media has been flooded with condolences to the family from local law makers and elected officials all week long.
