After CNN analyst April Ryan called on Trump to fire Press Secretary Sarah Sanders — saying it was time to “start lopping the heads off ” — Sanders fired back, calling Ryan’s comments “a new low, even for the liberal media.”
Sanders told Fox & Friends, “Look, I’ve had reporters say a lot of things about me.”
“They’ve said I should be choked. They said I deserve a lifetime of harassment, but certainly never had anyone say I should be decapitated.”
“This takes us to a new low, even for the liberal media,” Sanders added. “It just once again proves why this journalist isn’t taken seriously.” Watch below:
“Countless” FBI agents
The whole thing started over something Sanders said in 2017. While speaking with reporters, she said “countless” FBI agents had lost confidence in ex-FBI director James Comey and were supportive of President Donald Trump’s decision to fire Comey.
Later, Mueller investigators questioned her and she clarified that it was an unscripted “slip of the tongue.”
When Mueller’s report was released last week, the media seized on the inclusion of Sanders’ admission. Ryan declared that this made Sanders a “liar” who should be fired.
Ryan: Liar, liar!
“When there is a lack of credibility there, you have to start and start lopping the heads off,” said Ryan. “It’s ‘Fire Me Thursday’ or ‘Fire Me Good Friday’ — she needs to go. …I have to have security because of being called ‘fake’ and a ‘loser’ and all sorts of things from that White House. It’s time for her to go.”
Sanders’ original statement is an obvious bit of hyperbole that should have easily been dismissed. As she told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos last week, it was “spoken in the heat of the moment.”
After all, there are few things in this world that are actually countless. It was a word used in the spur of the moment that should have been taken to mean “a lot” or “many.”
Instead, the media has latched onto it and acts as though Sanders stands up on the podium every day and reads Mother Goose to the American people.
Sanders made a mistake, she acknowledged it, and now it is time to move on. If saying “countless” is Sanders’ worst crime, she is light years ahead of 99.9% of the politicians in office as well as every person that has ever held that position before her.
