There was a rather unfortunate accident in West London on Tuesday involving a British royal family motorcade transporting the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, better known as Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton.
A police motorcycle serving as an escort ahead of Will and Kate’s motorcade accidentally hit and injured an 83-year-old woman while attempting to clear the street of traffic.
Octogenarian widow injured
Fox News reported that the royals were traveling to Windsor Castle in their Range Rover for a special ceremony, flanked by at least four police motorcycle escorts.
One of those motorcycle escorts was clearing traffic on the opposite side of the road ahead of the royal couple when it hit the 83-year-old widow named Irene Mayor, who was thrown into the air by the impact, landing hard on the ground.
“His bike hit her and she spun round, off her feet and fell badly on the floor,” an unnamed witness said. “The officer was devastated. But he was going on the wrong side of the road. It could have been so much worse.”
Mayor was airlifted to a nearby hospital and was last listed in “serious but stable” condition with a broken pelvis and other injuries.

Royals “devastated” by incident
The royal couple were also said to be “devastated” by what had occurred.
They sent flowers and an apology note to the woman and her adult daughter and requested an opportunity to meet with her in person at a later date if permitted.
They did not learn of what had happened until after they arrived at Windsor, as it is standard protocol for diplomatic or royal motorcades to continue on their way even if the police escorts are involved in an accident.
The incident is being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
The woman’s daughter, Fiona, confirmed her mother’s injuries and that she was in stable condition. Several of the woman’s friends praised her as a wonderful person and expressed their hopes that she would quickly recover from the terrible injuries she suffered.
This was a terrible accident and there is no doubt that everyone involved feels bad about what happened. Hopefully, the royal couple will be granted the chance to apologize in person to the woman who was hit by their escort and that everything possible is done to aid and ensure her recovery.
