‘Knocked me unconscious’: Romney taken to hospital after serious fall while visiting family

While some supporters of former President Donald Trump might cheer on the political fall of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) in response to his frequent criticism, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee was reportedly injured in a more literal fall over the weekend.

According to reports, the senator spent some time in the hospital to get stitched up after taking a serious tumble while visiting his grandchildren. He confirmed that the fall rendered him “unconscious,” according to the New York Post.

“That was a problem”

Additional details were not immediately available, but Romney did have some fun with the situation upon returning to work this week with his injuries on full display. Curious reporters asked about the events that led to his injuries and he quipped: “I went to CPAC, that was a problem.”

Of course, Romney was not on the guest list at the Conservative Political Action Conference this year, which featured a speech by Trump. At least he acknowledged that it probably would have been a bad idea for him to show up.

“I took a fall,” he went on to confirm. “Knocked me unconscious. But I’m doing better.”

Reporters pressed him further, asking how many stitches he received after he was taken to the hospital. He replied that it was “a lot of stitches” but said he never received a specific number from medical professionals.

“I asked the doctor how many stitches and she said, ‘I don’t know,'” Romney added. “But it’s all through my eyebrow and my lip.”

“If you’re looking for Pierre Delecto”

The Utah Republican was also sporting a fairly obvious black eye, leading to some speculation on social media regarding the true story behind his injuries.

Though he was not present at CPAC, some invited speakers nevertheless referenced him throughout the duration of the event, which was held in Orlando, Florida, this year.

Former U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a fellow Utah Republican, took a few jabs at Romney — and his Twitter alter ego — to a round of laughs from attendees.

“My name is Jason Chaffetz,” he said. “I’m from Utah and I am not Mitt Romney. If you’re looking for Pierre Delecto, you need to go down the hall, go left, and then just keep going left until — well, just keep going left. That’s where you’ll find him.”

Even Trump took aim at Romney during his remarks, affirming that “the Democrats don’t have grandstanders like Mitt Romney.”
