Filming has halted for one of the year’s most anticipated films as its star fights an infection of the coronavirus.
Actor Robert Pattinson tested positive for COVID-19, leaving the future of The Batman in limbo — at least for now, as reported by Variety.
A highly anticipated performance
Production for the latest version of the ubiquitous superhero movie was previously delayed by the coronavirus pandemic itself and the shutdowns caused by the public health crisis.
With insiders initially predicting a theatrical release around the end of this year, earlier delays made such a timeline unlikely.
Now that Pattinson has tested positive, the entire production has been ground to a halt while he remains in isolation.
The project reportedly has more than three months of filming to go before it is finished. Considering the latest roadblock, production will probably not wrap until well into 2021.
Considering factors such as editing, The Batman is not expected to reach screens for more than a year.
“The downsides kind of seem like upsides”
Earlier this year, Pattinson spoke about the opportunity to portray the iconic hero on the big screen as part of a GQ cover story in July for which he shot his own photos amid a coronavirus lockdown.
“I think sometimes the downsides — which I’ve definitely thought about — the downsides kind of seem like upsides,” he said of the challenges associated with portraying Batman. “I kind of like the fact that not only are there very, very, very well-done versions of the character which seem pretty definitive, but I was thinking that there are multiple definitive playings of the character.”
He went on to say that he recently saw footage of actor George Clooney expressing concerns “about the fact that it’s sort of been done, that a lot of the ground you should cover with the character has been already covered,” noting that Clooney portrayed the character in Batman & Robin more than 20 years ago.
Nevertheless, actors continue to bring their own unique interpretation to the well-worn role — and Pattinson promises to do the same.
As he represents just the latest celebrity to highlight an ongoing pandemic, fans around the world are wishing him a speedy recovery.
