Rumors are swirling that Democrat White House hopeful Joe Biden may not participate in the upcoming presidential debates. But according to the chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), such a move would be “disqualifying.”
According to Breitbart, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Tuesday that if Biden can’t handle a debate, he can’t handle the job of commander in chief.
“I just want to say this — I think it is disqualifying,” she told Fox Business on Tuesday, according to Breitbart.
McDaniel went on: “If you cannot debate in front of the American people, and make your case as to why you should be president, as to why you should go up against people like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin or [Chinese leader] Xi [Jinping], then you should not be president.”
“Incoherent at best”
McDaniel also said Tuesday that in addition to many Democrats in the media and elsewhere, Biden himself “doesn’t want to debate.”
“He is incoherent at best,” she alleged, as Breitbart reported. “We’ve seen many of his gaffes from his basement. They are afraid to put him on a debate stage.”
But, as McDaniel argued, if Biden can’t handle a one-on-one with President Donald Trump, how could the former vice president handle the day-to-day work of the Oval Office?
“You need to debate,” she said Tuesday, according to Breitbart. “I think if he doesn’t debate, if he doesn’t do all three, he should be disqualified from actually running for president.”
“Waiting for Donald”
Biden’s campaign, for its part, has maintained that the former VP doesn’t plan on skipping any debates.
“Joe Biden said in June that he looks forward to debating Donald Trump on the dates and in the locations chosen by the Presidential Commission on Debates. We are still waiting for Donald Trump to agree to as much,” a Biden campaign staffer told The Hill on Monday.
But that doesn’t mean calls for him to bow out will be stopping anytime soon. Indeed, Biden’s long list of gaffes has apparently left his supporters worried; The Hill reports that “Joe Lockhart, a prominent Democratic strategist and former White House spokesman for the Clinton administration, wrote in a CNN op-ed [to Biden] that ‘whatever you do, don’t debate Trump.'”
Only time will tell if Biden gives in and heeds their advice.
